内容简介:
The singles rate is high for men in rural areas and women in cities. Motivated by this geographic distribution by gender, we study the effects of spatial sorting on local marriage and quantify its aggregate implications. We first show empirical patterns between marriage rate and three related shifters: a preference shifter that women pursue a hypergamous match while men prefer the opposite, an education shifter where women out-educate men over time, and a sectoral shifter in which women have comparative advantage in the service sector disproportionally located in larger cities. We then build a spatial equilibrium model with multi-sector and -skill production, migration and local marriage market, and quantify the relative contribution of the three shifters to observed spatial distribution and time trend of marriage rates.
